I'm an ENFP and so is Dr. Seuss

So first Cheryl did it. Then Micheal did it. Then Scottdid it, didn't like it, and did it again!

What lunacy are my friends engaged in? It's the quirky joy of the Personality Test. I don't know why these are fun - maybe it's something to help us find our inner desires though some "scientific" method. Naturally, I gave it a shot:

Click to view my Personality Profile page

Turns out I share those magical letters with some pretty heady luminaries including Robin Williams, Sandra Bullock, James Dobson, Joseph Campbell (I'm a sucker for those Reformationists), Regis Philbin, Bill Cosby, Bill Moyers (my favorite Bill), and the afore-mentioned Dr. Seuss.

(By The Way, one of those ENFP characteristics is an over-expanded vocabulary. So I apologize for my afore-mentioned "afore-mentioned".)

So after I did it, my amazing wife took the same test. Turns out we're the perfect example of "opposites attract." :-)

NEW MUSIC: Missy Higgins and some Brazilian Groove

Haven't done this in a while, so let's debut a few new artists:

Missy Higgins is another one of those over-talented and passionately honest girl singer/songwriters - right along the path of KT Tunstall, Anna Nalick or Maria Mena. My buddy over at Loudstyle, Jeremy, calls her "Norah Jones on Red Bull".

Down in the other hemisphere, there's this place called Brazil. I've never been there, but they churn out some incredible music that I can just put on and chill to all day. Now, your sampling today includes artists of all nationalities and eras, including Buena Vista Social Club, Compay Segundo, Fernanda Porto and Kaleidoscopio. Enjoy!

Class, some of you may casually dismiss techno music as a genre, and perhaps all of electronica all together. However, this may be a stereotypical effect due to your poor exposure to the media. (Translation: You haven't heard some good stuff yet!) So let's review some examples:

NEW BLOG: The Swayne Diaries

Like that little guy? Yep, I do too. I'm the lucky guy that gets to call him my son, and as of yesterday, he's 6 months old. All the pictures, videos and milestones we get to experience have become so much that my darling wife has decided to start a blog about it all. She may discuss other topics at some time, but for now it's all about the Squid. Head on over there and find out what he's been up to!

VIDEO: Great Performances

Not all great performers display their expertise through the "usual" art forms. Sure we can all appreciate a home run, a diving catch, a pirouette, a painting, or many other beautiful acts, but what about these? Even though these aren't traditional performers doing traditional things, I think we an all admire their work and finesse. No, seriously. :-)

VIDEO: Ben Folds Can Cover

If you're not familiar with the musical stylings of Ben Folds (or that of his Five, which is actually a three...), I'd encourage you to give him a shot. Not all his stuff works for me, but what I do like I enjoy a lot. But even with his extensive body of original work, it turns out some of the best stuff I've heard from him are his covers. Here's some video of those perfectly-imitated moments:

Ben Folds covers "Such Great Heights" by The Postal Service

Make sure and check out the found-objects instruments those drummers are playing. A postal box with a towel over it? A champagne glass? And there's even an appearance by a music player not named iPod™? Amazing.

Ben Folds covers "Tiny Dancer" by Sir Elton John

Extra points for the glasses.

Ben Folds & Rufus Wainwright cover "Careless Whisper" by George Michael

...and I couldn't resist this one:

Ben Folds gets covered by the Jabberwocks performing "Underground"

Enjoy!

NEW MUSIC: Mashups

What is a mashup? Urban Dictionary defines it like this:

Musical genre. Involves cutting and pasting samples and loops from two or more popular tracks to form a new track, often forming a suprisingly catchy new tune. Not as complex as remixed music. There are a number of bedroom djs who create moderate quality mashups.

The more different the genres of the source tunes, the more effective the mashup.

You downloaded the Run DMC vs Tom Petty mashup? DJBC is an artist, man.

So, take some different songs, make them work together, and boom! You've got yourself a mashup. Here's some of my favorites - see if you can pick out what songs are being mashed-up!

NEW MUSIC: Rani Arbo & Daisy Mayhem

You'll notice I mentioned these guys on my twitter, but I first discovered them listening to NPR. (Yeah, I'm cool like that. What, you got a problem with NPR??)

This music is really worth a listen. They take sounds and melodies that sound old, and reinvigorate them with contemporary songwriting and performance. Unfortunately, it's hard to find their stuff readily available. Here's one track that I loved - it's off their album "Gambling Eden":

STONE SOUP

Anyone out there remember this story? It was one of my favorites in the reading center in kindergarten.

I was just reminded of this moral from the story:

If you want to get people to do something, don't tell them how desperately they are needed. Don't try to appeal to their sympathy and kindness. Instead, create the impression that you are giving them the opportunity to be part of your success.

I think we can all use that one in our lives, right now.

TIPS I'VE LEARNED

I started writing these down one time - just thought I'd post them for you.

  • If you're approaching a door with one of those bar-style push handles that goes across the whole thing, and you don't know which direction it's going to open, hold out both hands and as you're walking through, lightly push on both sides of the door. One direction will give, and you can open the door without a struggle.

  • If your mouth gets dry, try chewing your tongue a little - it will start saliva flowing again in your mouth. Be warned, however - I've been told you can only do this trick once every hour or so.

  • Whenever you get a new gadget with a plug adapter, they usually come wrapped with a rubber-coated wire tie. When you unpack your new gadget, wrap the wire tie around the cord near the plug. This way you'll always have something to keep the cord coiled up when you need to pack it up.

  • When filling up your car, pick a nice even dollar amount that's close to what it costs to fill your tank and only pump to that point. This saves you time with your checkbook later, and if you do it consistently, makes it easier to calculate your fuel/commute budget.

  • If you grab your lunch from a restaurant and eat it at your desk, always make sure to pick up TONS of napkins when you get your food. You can put the extras in a drawer and use them to clean up random minor spills. They can even act as tissues in a pinch.

VIDEO: Those Crazy Japanese

In case you haven't noticed, the Japanese do some crazy stuff on TV. Humiliating, can't-stop-watching-the-train-wreck stuff. And yet, it's usually quite funny...

This one's worth another post for today...

ULTIMATE BEST MAN SPEECH

VIDEO: A Cappella is COOL.

Many of you know of my passion for a cappella music, particularly when applied to the music of today. There's tons of college groups doing this kind of thing now, and they put out some incredible stuff. Here's just a few of my favorites.

Frou Frou - Let Go

System of a Down - Aerials

U2 - I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For

Fall Out Boy - Sugar, We're Goin' Down

Queen - Bohemian Rhapsody

WORTHY OF BLOGGER PR!

Looks like I'm important enough to warrant some blogger PR! Yes folks, I have arrived.

They've asked me to link to their company's site, so I'm doing so in the email below. Thanks, Abazias for taking notice of a little ol' blogger like me!

Hi there,

I noticed that you recently blogged about our "Will a Diamond Engagement Ring Blend?" video! We found the topic to be extremely interesting and glad you felt it was worth a mention as well.

In looking at your recent post http://stoplookingswan.blogspot.com/2007/08/video-journey-she-did-what.html
, I was wondering if you would be willing to include a link to the actual video or our website within that post?

If this is something you'd be interested in doing, or discussing, please feel free to let me know.

Also, if you had any additional ideas to discuss, I would love to hear them!

Respectfully,
Julie

VIDEO JOURNEY: Animated Text

Who says you need actual people to make a video? These videos will show you that all it takes is the words on the page... with some funky animation.

The Ocean's Eleven Project

Typographics - Vancouver Film School

DJ Format - The Hit Song

- this one has people and text, but it's GENIUS. Sample line:

"...I've got more hits than when you're playing blackjack with a deck of twos..."

Brazil Typography

Hey Ya

- apparently this kid named Obadiah Parker covered Outkast's "Hey Ya", and it's AWESOMEAWESOME

More sweet vids available and compiled by the GREAT Dave Shea at mezzoblue.
